Sony Group, in collaboration with Startale, has introduced Soneium, a public Ethereum layer-2 blockchain. This move is part of Sony’s broader strategy to integrate blockchain technology into its diverse sectors, including entertainment, gaming, finance and electronics. Soneium aims to bring Web3 technologies into everyday applications, enhancing user experiences with blockchain advantages.
According to the official announcement, “Soneium, developed by Sony Block Solutions Labs, is creating a next-generation public Ethereum layer-2 blockchain ecosystem designed to evoke emotions and inspire creativity. It will bridge Web3 technology with everyday internet services (Web2), simplifying blockchain adoption for users”.
Sony’s Push for Ethereum Mainstream Adoption
Soneium is designed as an Ethereum layer-2 solution, leveraging the Op Stack from the Optimism Foundation to boost scalability and efficiency while preserving Ethereum’s security features. This approach addresses Ethereum’s common issues, such as slow processing speeds and high transaction costs.
Jun Watanabe, Chairman of Sony Block Solutions Labs, emphasized the strategic value of Soneium: “The development of a comprehensive Web3 solution based on blockchain is crucial for the Sony Group, aligning with our mission to Fill the world with emotion through the power of creativity and technology”.
The new blockchain aims to be a versatile platform catering to various global industries and user needs. It seeks to create a robust, developer-friendly environment that supports innovation and empowers communities and creators.
Sony’s entry into the Ethereum ecosystem is notable for its scale and ambition. Watanabe commented, “While the industry has focused on Web3 enthusiasts, Sony’s strong distribution channels and existing user base will help Soneium reach mainstream users and extend beyond Web3.”
Soneium is set to support a range of innovative applications across entertainment, gaming, finance and more, harnessing blockchain technology for new user experiences. Sony plans to provide a fully-featured testnet to allow developers to test and refine their projects in a controlled environment.

Soneium’s participation will contribute to the Optimism Collective, supporting the network’s growth.”
The launch of Soneium’s testnet is imminent, providing developers with their first opportunity to interact with the platform. Sony will release detailed technical documentation and tools to facilitate community engagement with the testnet.
“We are excited to launch the Soneium testnet soon. Developers and creators will be able to explore the development environment and begin building applications. We will reveal more details of the testnet shortly,” the press release stated.
