The Open Network (TON) is back online after experiencing its second major outage within 36 hours. The TON Community announced the network’s return to normal functionality around 1:00 am UTC on August 29 via their official Telegram group, following an outage that began at 7:17 pm on August 28.
TON network is fully operational! the community stated, adding that withdrawals and deposits to TON wallets would be processed in the coming hours and days.
The latest outage lasted just over six hours, with TON attributing the issue to a surge in network activity triggered by the launch of a new TON-based memecoin called Dogs (DOGS). The first outage occurred at around 11:00 pm UTC on August 27 and halted block production for six hours before the network came back online around 5:30 am UTC on August 28.
Both outages were linked to the DOGS memecoin by market observers and TON Community members, a connection later confirmed by official TON channels following the second network disruption. In total, the TON network has been down for more than 12 hours over the past 36 hours.

DOGS, a new memecoin running on the TON blockchain, was officially introduced in July 2024 and launched on August 27. It’s marketed as the “most Telegram-native memecoin,” drawing inspiration from Spotty, the pet dog of Telegram founder and CEO Pavel Durov, who was arrested in France on August 24. The launch of DOGS led to significant congestion on the TON network, with the token generating over $1.7 billion in trading volume within its first 10 hours.
The official Dogs channel on Telegram has gained nearly 17 million subscribers in less than two months since the token was first proposed. Despite the challenges, TON, the third-party blockchain protocol integrated with the Telegram messaging platform, remains operational and unaffected by Durov’s arrest.
Toncoin, the native token of the TON blockchain, saw an 8% increase in value following the network’s restoration and is currently trading at $5.57 according to CoinGecko. However, Toncoin has dropped 17% over the past week, with its price taking a hit following Durov’s arrest.
