Executives from Blockchain Capital, MetaGood, Dragonfly, Arche Capital and Breyer Capital participated in a panel on August 21 to discuss venture capital strategies at the Wyoming Blockchain Symposium.
Rob Hadick, a general partner at Dragonfly, highlighted that traditional institutional investors often lag behind their crypto-native counterparts in performance. He emphasized that crypto is a distinct asset class with unique characteristics, requiring a different approach from conventional finance. Hadick explained: “The liquidity profile, development timeline, risk surface, and open-source nature are all different in crypto – you need a broad understanding of these factors”.
Bart Stephens, founder and managing partner at Blockchain Capital, discussed his firm’s long-term strategy of holding tokens and equity in crypto startups. Instead of focusing on short-term gains from pre-token sales, Blockchain Capital emphasizes nurturing and gradually growing the companies they invest in.
Bill Tai, co-founder and chairman of MetaGood, stressed the importance of selecting teams and projects that are mission-driven rather than solely profit-oriented. He cautioned against choosing teams based only on technical talent without a clear purpose: “Teams that are mission-driven and believe in what they’re doing are far more productive than a group of well-paid, highly qualified individuals lacking a common goal”. Crypto VC funding in 2024 saw a decrease in the number of deals in Q2, but the total capital invested rose by 2.5%, reaching approximately $2.7 billion for the quarter.

Venture capitalist Adam Cochran recently mentioned to Cointelegraph that the slowdown in VC funding for crypto startups is partly due to significant price appreciation in blue-chip digital assets like Bitcoin and Ether. He noted that many institutional investors prefer to secure these gains, which outperform the S&P 500, rather than take on the higher risk associated with startup investments.
