Canto, a Cosmos-based layer-1 blockchain known for its Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) compatibility and focus on decentralized finance (DeFi) applications, has been experiencing a significant outage lasting over 33 hours. The blockchain, which launched in August 2022, halted operations due to what it describes as an “issue with consensus.”
The Canto blockchain has not processed any new transactions since 2:29 am UTC on August 11, as reported by CantoScan and Etherscan. The blockchain’s block explorer indicates that the last transaction occurred on block 10847516, and there have been no updates in the last 46 hours.
In response to the outage, Canto’s team announced that they will implement an upgrade at 12:00 pm UTC on August 12 to address the consensus issue. The consensus mechanism is critical for validating and recording transactions on blockchain, and issues with it can lead to halts in blockchain activity.
The timing of this outage is noteworthy as it follows the Callisto upgrade, which was scheduled for August 9 at 14:30 UTC. Canto has not yet clarified whether this recent upgrade was completed successfully or if it could be related to the current outage.
Despite the disruption, Canto has assured users that all funds are safe and that normal operations will resume once the consensus problem is resolved. The blockchain’s team emphasizes that users should not be alarmed, and all usual activities should return to normal once the upgrade is complete.

Canto had previously announced a plan to migrate to the Ethereum Network as a layer-2 solution in September 2023, but this decision was reversed in March 2024. The blockchain remains a layer-1 network.
Activity on Canto surged in February 2023 but has since declined, with DefiLlama data showing it is currently ranked 80th by total value locked.
